Backlinks–You Just Thought Popularity Games Ended After High School

Getting authoritative backlinks is one of the most important tasks in promoting your website.  You may have thought the whole popularity rat race ended after High School, but it still comes into play on the Internet.

Just like back in High School, you are judged by the company you keep.  If you hang out with “the bad kids,” you will be seen as one.  If you hang out with “the good kids,” you will be judged accordingly.  How does this plan out online?

It’s all about the links you make to other pages.  You have to play the snob and the social climber in order to get ranking.  If you link to “bad neighborhoods,” you won’t get any ranking points for it.  It doesn’t matter how many of these kinds of links you make, you won’t climb the social ladder one step.

On the other hand, if a trusted and authoritative site links to your page, you get ranking points.  Definitely, the more you have of these, the more you’re seen as one of the “popular kids.”  Of course, your dilemma online is the same as being the new kid in school.  You have to find a way to connect with these higher ranking sites.

Most of the time, the webmasters of these sites will give you, the new kid, the cold shoulder.  They don’t want to be bothered with you, since they have nothing to gain by linking to your page.  What are you to do?

To get recognition, you have to make yourself known.  You have to establish your own authority, and you have to promote your own site.  This is accomplished in three primary ways.

  • Participating in a forum–not exactly the most fruitful of endeavors, but you can get your name known and provide backlinks to your website from places like Warrior Forum.  Just don’t get caught up in the drama.
  • Article writing–writing articles and submitting them to article directories is a good, solid way to get the word out that you know your niche.  You can also backlink to your website from here.
  • Blogging–probably the best way to build your authority.  Here, you can just be your own voice about your niche.  You can also promote your website from blogs.

All three techniques are a good start, but don’t think that you can just write a few articles or make a few posts and expect results.  Reputations aren’t built in a day, but they can be destroyed in seconds.
